Ethereum Loses $2,500 as Inflation Shock Hits ETH

Ethereum had a tough start to October, a brief rebound this week, and now another setback. The hot CPI report pushed ETH below a level it had just reclaimed, and the funds that track it saw outflows again.

From $2,500 to below it

Before the inflation data, Ethereum looked constructive. Bulls were positioning for a potential rebound toward $2,600, with the 50-day moving average supporting the upward move. Resistance was marked near $2,747 at the SuperTrend line.

Then the CPI report arrived. Ethereum extended its decline below $2,500 after the hotter-than-expected reading renewed selling across the crypto market, trading near $2,430 and down 3.1% at one point. A later tracker showed a steeper drop, with ETH at $2,346.96 after falling 6.2%, backed by a market cap of $286.719 billion and trading volume of $17.881 billion. Different snapshots show different prices because the market was moving quickly during the day.

The funds again

The ETF story followed the same pattern. Ethereum ETFs posted a net outflow of $129.51 million after the report, the third-largest outflow of October. Over the past 30 days, the 11 Ethereum funds have seen net outflows of $441.29 million, and total net assets sit at $15.20 billion.

What makes this especially frustrating for Ethereum bulls is the timing. On the day before the CPI report, Ethereum ETFs recorded an inflow of $24.84 million, ending a 10-session outflow streak and marking the first positive day of the month. That hopeful sign lasted only one session before the inflation shock brought selling back.

Why ETH tends to react strongly

Ethereum is generally treated as a higher-risk asset than Bitcoin. Its investor base includes people betting on activity across applications built on the network, so it often swings more when risk appetite changes. One technical report said that derivatives and spot markets both showed rising selling after the data. When both parts of the market lean the same way, a move tends to have more momentum.

The inflation numbers also feed directly into rate expectations. One headline summed it up by saying that the hot CPI raised Fed hike odds, and higher rates tend to weigh on assets whose appeal depends on growth and sentiment.

Key levels

  • Resistance: around $2,548, where ETH has struggled to hold gains.
  • Former support turned resistance: $2,500, which the market had just reclaimed.
  • Upside targets before the report: $2,600 and $2,747, which now look distant.

If Ethereum can climb back above $2,500 and stay there, the damage may prove temporary. If it cannot, the failed reclaim could encourage more selling.

What to watch next

  1. Whether ETH can close back above $2,500 within the next few sessions.
  2. Whether ETF flows turn positive again after the one-day inflow on October 13.
  3. Whether rate expectations continue to move against risk assets.

The takeaway: Ethereum’s recovery attempt has been interrupted by a macro shock. The long-term story around the network is unchanged, but short-term price action depends heavily on inflation data, interest rate expectations and fund flows. Until those settle, expect more volatility.
